There are currently approximately 360 children in the City, aged between birth and sixteen years, with a significant permanent, or long term fluctuating, hearing loss.  The Team is involved at some level with all these children from diagnosis to leaving school.   The vast majority of children are educated in their local mainstream school, supported at various levels by specialist qualified peripatetic teachers. Of these, approximately 35 children receive regular weekly visits from our teachers.

We operate an open referral system. The Educational Audiologist oversees these children and they are allocated to various teachers for in school assessments. Of those seen, 48% are seen within a week, and 86% are seen within a month of the referral being received.

We support children at all stages of the code of practice who have an educationally significant hearing loss in mainstream and special schools.

We provide a range of services including direct teaching, specialist assessments to inform curriculum planning and educational provision, audiological management, educational support and INSET packages for teachers, teaching assistants and other professionals.

A small number of children attend the Royal School for the Deaf in Derby.
