Leicester City Education Welfare Service is working with schools and parents across the city to raise the profile of attendance, encouraging children and young people to attend school regularly in order to make the most of the opportunities available to them and give them more choice in the future.
The Education Welfare Service 2009 Attendance Campaign will focus on primary schools to highlight the link between attendance and attainment.
A poster competition is running for all primary schools – the theme of the poster is to encourage children to attend school everyday and on time. A number of prizes are available.
Information for Parents: Parents need to be responsible for making sure their children attend school on a regular basis. The links below provide information on why it is important your child attends and what the consequences can be for a parent.
Community Involvement: The local community is also important in supporting school attendance. Children and young people who are absent from school are more likely to become involved in crime and they could be at risk. On the other hand, good school attendance is linked to better qualifications and can have a longer-term positive impact on communities.
Local businesses can support their local school by displaying posters and contacting the school or the Education Welfare Service if they see pupils who are not in school during school time. EWS tel: (0116) 221 1260.
The Police and Education Welfare Officers will also be operating truancy patrols in the weeks surrounding the campaign.
