The Education Welfare Service works with schools and families to reduce truancy.
Parents are responsible in law for ensuring their children receive a satisfactory education, including attending the school at which they are registered regularly.
Each school has an Education Welfare Officer (EWO) attached to it, who works with the school to raise and maintain attendance levels. Meetings with the parents of irregular attenders are held and EWOs work with families to help to return their children to regular attendance.
Penalty Notices
Legislation means that parents may also be issued with a Penalty Notice for £50 if their child plays truant. If this is not paid within 28 days the penalty becomes £100. See the Penalty Notice Guide for further information.
