RALAC - Raising the Achievements of Looked After Children

RALAC

The purpose of the team is to work closely with schools, Social Care and Health and other agencies in order to:

Ensure that the specific needs of Looked After Children are accurately identified.

Assist in raising the educational standards achieved by these children.

Promote an improved understanding of the issues that affect Looked After Children by contributing to the training of teachers, social workers and foster carers.

GCSE Centre

The centre caters for the specific needs of children in care who have become excluded or disaffected from mainstream education.  Intensive support is offered to enable young people to re-engage in education through success in GCSE and GNVQ examinations.

The centre works closely with schools, colleges and other agencies to enable young people to continue on to mainstream programmes of study, training or employment.

Planned expansion of the project includes the delivery of courses preparing care leavers to live independently, literacy support programmes for children aged nine to eleven and an increase in the range of GCSE and GNVQs offered.

Referral Procedures

Each school has a named RALAC link worker. Referrals or requests for advice may be made by the designated teacher in the school concerned, or by other agencies, such as Social Care and Health Directorate, who are working directly with the child.
