Crèches

The facts

  • Crèches offer occasional care for children, usually under eight
  • They need to be registered with Ofsted if they run for more than 2 hours a day, even where some children attend for shorter periods
  • Temporary crèches that operate less than five days a year do not require registration with Ofsted
  • Some are in permanent premises such as colleges, Leisure Centres, workplaces and care for children while parents do activities such as shopping or sport
  • Some crèches must be booked in advance, others work on a drop in basis.
  • Many are linked to a particular activity or course.

How can I be sure of a good quality care?

  • 50% of all staff must have a relevant qualification
  • Staff must have recent first aid training
  • All registered crèches must meet the National Standards and are inspected regularly by Ofsted
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions
  • Download some useful questions for childcare providers

What will it cost me?

  • The cost for crèches varies from free to about £2.50 per hour
  • Some training courses provide a free or subsidised crèche to support adult learning.

Is it for me?

  • I want my child to socialise with other children in group situation
  • It will allow me to engage in an activity knowing my child is safe, well cared for and enjoying play opportunities
  • I like the idea of childcare as and when I need it, without any financial commitment
  • It’s an opportunity for getting my child used to group care before a more permanent placement
  • Short sessions, unfamiliar to my child could be unsettling
  • I don’t want to leave my child for longer than I need to
  • My child will be cared for whilst I study or do an activity.
