The facts
- Crèches offer occasional care for children, usually under eight
- They need to be registered with Ofsted if they run for more than 2 hours a day, even where some children attend for shorter periods
- Temporary crèches that operate less than five days a year do not require registration with Ofsted
- Some are in permanent premises such as colleges, Leisure Centres, workplaces and care for children while parents do activities such as shopping or sport
- Some crèches must be booked in advance, others work on a drop in basis.
- Many are linked to a particular activity or course.
How can I be sure of a good quality care?
- 50% of all staff must have a relevant qualification
- Staff must have recent first aid training
- All registered crèches must meet the National Standards and are inspected regularly by Ofsted
- Don't be afraid to ask questions

What will it cost me?
- The cost for crèches varies from free to about £2.50 per hour
- Some training courses provide a free or subsidised crèche to support adult learning.
Is it for me?
- I want my child to socialise with other children in group situation
- It will allow me to engage in an activity knowing my child is safe, well cared for and enjoying play opportunities
- I like the idea of childcare as and when I need it, without any financial commitment
- It’s an opportunity for getting my child used to group care before a more permanent placement
- Short sessions, unfamiliar to my child could be unsettling
- I don’t want to leave my child for longer than I need to
- My child will be cared for whilst I study or do an activity.
