Special Needs Transport

We also provide free transport for pupils with Special Educational Needs if their Statement says they need it.

Some children with a statement of special educational needs get transport even if they live closer to their school than the usual limits. We only do this if there are special reasons included in their statement.

 

 

School Transport for Pupils (with a statement of Special Needs) aged Under 19

 

Transport assistance will be given if you are:

 

  1. You are a resident in Leicester City

  2. Your child is attending the nearest appropriate and allocated school to your home.

  3. The distance from your home to school, measured by the shortest distance is over two miles for a child under eight years old and three miles for a child over eight years old.

 

Notes

 

Transport may be provided for pupils who do not meet the statutory distance described above on the following grounds:

 

a) Physical/ Sensory/ Medical Need, following advice from the medical officer.

b) Reasons of safety. taking into account the development age and the emotional needs of the pupil.

c) Students considered under a) and b) above will not qualify for transport over the age of 21 years.

d) All children with special needs will be considered carefully for eligibility for free transport at the point of assessment.

 

Transport will not be provided when:

 

  1. If the pupil does not fulfil the criteria of 1,2 and 3 or a) or b) above.

  2. If the parent/guardian request a place that is not the nearest appropriate school at which a place is available

  3. To work experience placements or other extra curricular activities

  4. To dental or hospital appointments.

  5. To clinical, medical or non-educational appointments.

  6. In the event of sickness in the school day

  7. In the event of detention

  8. Following persistent misbehavior occuring on transport

School Transport for Pupils (with a statement of Special Needs) aged 16 and over (FE)

 

  1. A student must be a resident of Leicester City
  2. Transport will be provided if the school / college is within the City boundaries or to the nearest appropriate County College applying for the distance criteria of three miles or the Special Needs exceptions for a full time course.
  3. Transport arrangements will be made for Out of County and specialist colleges on a term basis.

 

Notes

 

Students unable to use public transport must complete a transport request form available from the College with the College's endorsement on why transport is needed. It should be noted that it is not always possible to meet variable start and finish times.

 

Students will have bus passes wherever possible.

 

A student may continue to recieve help past 21 years of age if on a continuing course of study commence before the age of 21. However we do consider a course of study be no longer than 2-3 years. Transport assistance will not be afforded after the age of 24 years prior to the start of new term.
