Special Needs Transport

We provide free transport for pupils under 16 with Special Educational Needs when placed at a school or college which is further than 2 or 3 miles depending on age, or where the student has mobility difficulties.

 

Special needs transport under 16

Transport assistance will be given if you are:

  • A resident in Leicester City

  • Your child is attending the nearest appropriate and allocated school to your home.
  • The distance from your home to school, measured by the shortest walking distance and is over two miles for a child under eight years old and three miles for a child over eight years old.
  • Transport may be provided for pupils who do not meet the statutory distance described above on the following grounds:
  • Long term Medical Condition with restricted mobility.
  • Sensory Impairment with restricted mobility.
  • Cognitive  abilities associated with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
  • Emotional Immaturity with restricted mobility
  • All children with special needs will be considered carefully for eligibility for free transport at the point of assessment.


Transport will not be provided when:

  • If the pupil does not fulfil the criteria.

  • If the parent/guardian request a place that is not the nearest appropriate school at which a place is available

  • To work experience placements or other extracurricular placements.

  • To dental or hospital appointments.

  • To clinical, medical or non-educational appointments.

  • In the event of sickness in the school day

  • In the event of detention

  • Following persistent misbehaviour occurring on transport

School transport for pupils (with a statement of special needs) aged 16 and over (FE)

  • A student must be a resident of Leicester City

  • Transport will be provided to a school or college that is within the City boundaries or to the nearest appropriate County College, and the attendance time is in excess of 16 hours per week.

  • Transport arrangements will be made for Out of County and specialist colleges on a term basis, after consultation regarding the absolute need to do so.

 

  • Post 16 SEN students must contact the special education needs coordinator (SENCO) at the college who will complete a transport request form. It should be noted that it is not possible to meet variable start and finish times.

  • The journeys will be based on an AM inward journey and an AM outward journey as well as a PM inward journey and a PM outward journey

  • Students will be offered a bus pass giving 24/7 cover throughout the academic year when requested at the start of the academic year.

  • A student may continue to receive transport up to the age of 25 years.

  • Transport assistance will not be afforded after the age of 24 years prior to the start of new term.
