  • Use the Internet: there are lots of family history websites you can explore. If you haven’t got access to the Internet at home you can log on free of charge at all libraries in Leicester. Visit Family History Websites for a list of useful information.

  • Read books about how to research family history – many are available at your local library or visit the online catalogue to find books.

  • Visit the BBC Family History website which provides lots of information that can help you get started.

  • Courses available at adult learning centres and at the Record Office that will guide you through using resources and records.

  • Start exploring records held at your local reference library and record office – you will find lots of resources such as published records and indexes on microfilm, microfiche or CD-ROM.

  • Check out your local family history society. Family history societies can offer members a great deal of help and support; most have research centres and libraries containing a wide range of records, indexes and resources.

TIP:

Make a tree to your great-grandparents, refer back to living family members to validate information you have found. Once this has been done choose one of your great-grandparents that you wish to follow.
