Blam! also saw Graphic novelist Paul Gravett give a fascinating talk to a large audience at the library as well as a brand new Graphic Novel collection.

 About 120 people attended the Central Lending Library to listen to Hardeep Singh Kohli talk about his new book – Indian Takeaway.

 

Hardeep began with a reading from the book and then talked to the audience about his experiences travelling, cooking and being on TV. The appreciative audience then had an opportunity to ask Hardeep questions, and there were no shortage of interesting things asked.

 The event was run at the library to celebrate National Poetry Day. Lots of enthusiastic poets, some new to poetry and some more experienced - gathered round the table for a workshop run by local poet Lydia Towsey who is the main organiser of Word! and artistic director of The Lyric Lounge.

The theme of the workshop was Heroes and Heroines – in line with the National Poetry Day theme and Lydia worked all the participants very hard and they produced lots of poems. See more...

At the beginning of October around 30 people attended an event at Westcotes Library for Reading Groups so members could meet each other, get to know what the libraries could do for them and generally to have a good time.

Local Crime author Rod Duncan spoke at the event.

Local authors Jane Adams and newcomer Jim Green, entertained a packed Knighton Library with accounts of their writing lives and readings from their work.

Central Lending Library played host to bestselling Simon Beckett and new writer SJ Bolton (pictured) who chilled the audience to the bone with their forensic details and lots of talk about snakes. There were many interesting questions from the audience. See more...

The afternoon library club also played host to an illustrated talk from Leicestershire Police and 30 plus members listened to a fascinating talk about the role of forensics in the fight against real life crime.

The event was part of Black History Season celebrations in Leicester and Bernadine Evaristo’s appearance was keenly anticipated. After an afternoon visit to English Martyrs School where she talked to a group of ‘A’ level English students Bernadine went to the evening event at Highfields Library. Highfields is a library with a well deserved reputation for engaging wholeheartedly with its community – and the staff rose to the challenge of promoting this popular author.  A diverse audience of around 40 plus people came along to the event and listened to Bernadine reading from two of her books.

As part of Older People's Month there was a day of celebration at Central Lending Library.

A group of older people, including local poet Bobba Bennett (pictured) took part in an enjoyable writing workshop led by resident poet, The Bookdoctor.

NHS & Library Reading Volunteers

Reading Volunteers Valsa

We are training our first cohort of volunteers in partnership with the NHS.

Our volunteers will work in health and library settings with individuals and groups - using books and reading to make people feel better.
