Target Audience
Early years practitioners with leadership responsibilities within or across settings, children’s centres or neighbourhoods working towards a degree OR where substantial component of first degree was outside early years.
Early years practitioners seeking development opportunities at level 6.
Aim: The UCPD is for those working directly with or supporting others who work with children who have speech, language and communication needs.
Description: The UCPD consists of two modules. The Communication Development and Needs module is delivered through face-to-face teaching on a weekly basis for two terms. The Collaborative Working module is available as a blended learning module. Both modules include two pieces of accessed coursework. The communication module provides an opportunity for people to increase their knowledge of the development of communication in children and explore the application of this knowledge to their work in a range of settings. They will be consider and evaluate a variety of strategies that can be used to support children with such needs. In the Collaboration module students focus on inter-professional communication. They develop an understanding of the theoretical and practical issues that arise when practitioners work together to support children with communication needs. They will develop an appreciation of the factors which influence collaborative working including the current political agenda, possible barriers to working together and examples of good practice.
Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
· Objectively review their knowledge of communication development and identify future learning needs
· Demonstrate their ability to creatively apply their understanding of the ways in which language and learning are linked for children
· Critically evaluate the literature about methods of supporting children with communication needs
· Analyse and evaluate the application of specific strategies for supporting children with communication needs.
· Reflect on their own experiences of working in partnership with others either formally or informally
· Objectively review the factors which may hinder and facilitate collaborative working practices.
· Evaluate the implications of current national and local policies for collaborative working in current or future work.
· Identify the knowledge and skills needed by practitioners to facilitate collaborative working practices
Pre-requisites: Leicester City practitioners should complete Get Going with Communication prior to taking the UCPD
