The Agreed Syllabus for RE must be reviewed by law every five years. A new syllabus needs to be available for use in school by September 2009.

The legally required five yearly review of our RE syllabus enables the LA, through the SACRE and in consultation with interested parties, to bring its RE syllabus up to date in line with national educational change, and in ways which will raise standards in the LA’s schools and set aims for progress for the future clearly. Such review aims to establish a platform for raising standards in RE, to reflect local needs and circumstances and to inform the public about RE in our common schools. These purposes are parallel to those of the National Curriculum in other subjects, and in this sense the Agreed Syllabus is for RE the equivalent of a subject order for the subjects of the National Curriculum.

As a part of this process, the headteacher and RE co-ordinators of all Leicester City schools were consulted and asked to complete a detailed questionnaire on their feelings and judgements about the current agreed syllabus for RE and what they would like to see in a future Agreed Syllabus.
