City Community Safer Sex Project

 

The Community Safer Sex Project trains and supports community workers to provide basic sexual health information and services for young people in a wide range of community settings, including colleges, youth work sites, Connexions, and housing projects. The Project seeks to promote safer sex awareness and the avoidance of unplanned teenage pregnancy in line with the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy and national drivers such as Every Child Matters. We do this by providing training, resources and professional support to workers.

 

The Project aims to make it easier for young men & women from all communities to access sexual health information and services in familiar surroundings. Community-based services enable young people to discuss issues and concerns regarding sexual health and relationships, in a safe and confidential environment, with trained workers they already know and trust. Workers will encourage young people to explore all their options including the option not to have sex. Workers can provide condoms and pregnancy tests where appropriate, in line with nationally and locally agreed guidance. Workers maintain close links with clinical sexual health services and support young people to access these services as appropriate.

 

There are two separate Safer Sex Projects covering Leicester City and Leicestershire. We work closely together to ensure young people receive a consistent service.
