Microchipping

DON'T LOSE IT - COLLAR AND DISC IT

Control of Dogs Order (1992): Requires all dogs to wear a collar and identity tag, whilst in a public place. The tag should show the name and address of the owner. Dog owners can be fined up to £5,000 for the offence. This law applies even if the dog is microchipped.

Environmental Protection Act (1992): If a dog warden or member of the public cannot return a dog directly to its owner it will be taken to a kennelling provider. The above Act states: 'owners cannot claim a dog unless all fines and costs have been paid.' Current charge in Leicester for claiming a dog is £30 plus kennelling at £11.75 per day.

If you lose your dog: A dog is likely to be returned to an owner quickly by a dog warden or a member of the public - if it is wearing a collar and an identity tag; less distressing for dog and owner. The vast majority of strays dealt with in the city do not wear visible identification; making contacting owners more difficult.
