Dangerous Trees

We will investigate complaints regarding trees that are imminently likely to cause damage to the complainant or property on the complainant's land.  We can only take action as a last resort.  Therefore, the complainant must have proof that they have made a genuine effort to reach an agreement with the owner of the tree(s), for example, copies of letters sent to the owner.

A report is then made about the condition of the tree(s) by a qualified arboriculturalist (tree surgeon).

If a tree is dangerous, a formal Notice may be served on the owner of the tree requiring them to make it safe.  If the works are not carried out by the time specified in the Notice, we can carry out the works in the owner's default.  They would then be charged for the works and any administration costs incurred.

If a tree is not dangerous, but the tree surgeon recommends some remedial works, an informal letter is sent to the owner of the tree advising them what has been recommended.

If you have a complaint or query about a tree you believe may be dangerous, please contact our Customer Service Line.

Relevant Legislation: Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976
