Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

SmileSafe has come to an end – we have moved to the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme [FHRS]

Leicester’s SmileSafe scheme for food outlets has come to an end and has been replaced with the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. We have ended our scheme reluctantly but appreciate that with a national scheme:

  • Consumers will be able to compare food outlets not only in Leicester but also further afield – across England, Wales & Northern Ireland

  • Businesses will be treated fairly and consistently not just with other food outlets in Leicester but also with regional and national competitors.

Instead of being rated with a smiley or not so smiley face, food outlets are now being rated with a number from 5 to 0.

5 – “very good”

4 – “good”

3 – “generally satisfactory”

2 – “improvement necessary”

1 – “major improvement necessary”

0 – “urgent improvement necessary”

FHRS

We have sent Food Hygiene Rating Scheme stickers and certificates to all food outlets which had SmileSafe ratings – about 1,500. We are asking outlets to remove SmileSafe reports and put up FHRS certificates and stickers in prominent places such as front doors and windows. Please note that there is still no legal requirement on food outlets to display stickers and certificates. All ratings are however available on the website.

All SmileSafe ratings have been converted to the FHRS 5 or 4 or 3 or 2 or 1 or 0 ratings for each outlet and are available now on the national website:
