Archaeology Alert Area

Leicester has a clearly defined historic core. This is the area within the town defences that were first established in the Roman period and re-adopted in the mediaeval period, along with areas outside those defences in which it is known that there were Roman cemeteries, Roman or mediaeval suburbs and mediaeval religious houses. This historic core is defined in the City of Leicester Local Plan and Core Strategy as the Archaeology Alert Area in order to indicate to prospective developers where development is most likely to have an impact upon archaeological remains (though archaeological remains are not confined to the Archaeology Alert Area).

You can view the Archaeology Alert Area using our mapping system - CityStreAtZ .

The link above starts CityStreAtZ with the Area displayed.

To display detail of the Archaeology Alert Area where it covers a specific site that you are interested in, just click inside the site with the 'Information Tool'. Note that if you use a pop-up blocker in your browser you will need to allow all pop-ups from this site to extract information from the maps.

You can search for any property or site by address, postcode, building name or by zoom and pan within the map window itself. Hopefully the system is intuitive to use but it is recommended that you read the CityStreAtZ help to fully benefit from all the map sets and tools available. Help can also be accessed from the system's blue '?' button (top right).

All major applications within the Archaeology Alert Area will be required to include an assessment of the impact of the proposal upon archaeological remains. People coming forward with proposals for substantive development within the Archaeology Alert Area are advised to consult the City Archaeologist.
