Historic Environment Record (HER)

The City Historic Environment Record (HER) is a record of the historic environment, including archaeological remains, in the city. It is partly a computerised database, which incorporates the Urban Archaeological Database, and partly a paper record, with copies of all the unpublished reports generated by fieldwork in the city since the late 1980s.

Not only is it an invaluable tool for the City Archaeologist, it is also a record which is open to the public. The City Historic Environment Record can be viewed, by appointment, at the council offices. For further details, please contact the City Archaeologist.

You can view Monuments in the city using our mapping system - CityStreAtZ .

The link above starts CityStreAtZ with the monuments displayed.

To display details of monuments that cover a specific site that you are interested in, just click inside the site with the 'Information Tool'. Note that if you use a pop-up blocker in your browser you will need to allow all pop-ups from this site to extract information from the maps.

You can search for any property or site by address, postcode, building name or by zoom and pan within the map window itself. Hopefully the system is intuitive to use but it is recommended that you read the CityStreAtZ help to fully benefit from all the map sets and tools available. Help can also be accessed from the system's blue '?' button (top right).
