Bioblitz events are a fantastic way for the
community to get involved with the wildlife on their doorstep. The aim
is to record as many different species as possible, within a certain
time frame, and to encourage the public's interest and knowledge of
their local biodiversity. Scientists, students and the community come
together in local green spaces for a great educational day out.
Leicester City Council, in partnership with
Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire have hosted Bioblitz events in
the city's parks. This has become an annual event
receiving the support of City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby through his 100
Day Actions and support for recording wildlife in the City.
The first
award-winning Bioblitz was held at Watermead Country Park in May 2010 which focussed on members of the public recording wildlife in this attractive wetland nature reserve.
The second Bioblitz
event was held at Abbey Park in June 2011 and encouraged local schools
and visitors to record wildlife in an urban park close to the City.
The two events were very different, but have
encouraged over 3,000 people to get involved in seeing and recording
wildlife in the City. This year's event will be at Evington Park on
24th-25th May 2012.
