Conservation and the law

Demolition of buildings

Conservation Area Consent is required for the demolition of all or most of a building in a conservation area, which is over 115 cubic metres in size and also for the complete removal of boundary walls, fences or gates over 1 metre in height next to the highway or 2 metres elsewhere. It is criminal offence to carry out demolition in a conservation area without consent.

Trees

Trees in conservation areas, with a few exceptions, are protected by law and you must give the City Council six weeks' notice if you intend to cut down, lop or top them.

Satellite antennas

The planning laws contain restrictions on putting up antennas for receiving satellite television, and these controls are tighter in conservation areas than elsewhere. The Council wants to ensure that satellite dishes and other antennas are placed on buildings so as to have the least possible effect on their appearance.
