There are over 450 Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) in the city. The Planning Policy & Design Group is responsible for reviewing these and for making new Orders. It also has a duty to protect trees which are subject to TPOs, and to consider applications for works to other trees in conservation areas.
Applying to carry out works to protected trees
Consent is normally needed to carry out works to trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order, and most trees within conservation areas. Anyone proposing to carry out works to, or remove protected trees must first make a formal application to the City Council. A standard national Planning Application form must be used. Guidance notes are available.
Unauthorised works to protected trees
We will try to investigate reports of unauthorised works to protected trees within one working day. To report unauthorised works, please telephone our Helpline on (0116) 252 7000, or see our Contact Us page.
Advice and guidance
For advice and guidance on protected trees, please contact the City Council's Planning Officer (Trees) in the Conservation & Nature Team.
