Tree Preservation Orders: A Guide to the Law and Good Practice

This substantial guide was published by the Government in March 2000. It provides a definitive guide to the system of tree preservation orders (TPOs). The guide describes TPOs and the power of local authorities to make them. The mechanisms of making, confirming, varying and revoking an order are set out. The guide discusses the relationship of the TPO to planning and development and the exemptions allowing work on protected trees. A chapter considers trees in conservation areas. Replacement of a protected tree cut down by a landowner, and appeals against such a replacement obligation, are outlined, along with the penalties, compensation and injunctions which might be involved as the law takes its course.
