What is 'Permitted Development'?
'Permitted Development' is a blanket permission, granted by Government regulations, to carry out certain minor types of development without the need to make a planning application to the Council. On our page: Guidance for Householders, we provide more information on whether a planning application might be needed, and you are always welcome to check with our Planning service before carrying out such works.
When are permitted development rights removed?
In certain circumstances, the Council removes Permitted Development rights:
Article 3 Directions take the form of a condition on a planning permission, which restricts further extensions, alterations or uses. To check on such conditions you can search our Planning Database and view the Decision Notices relating to your property.
Article 4 Directions apply to a group of properties and often cover a large area, and are most frequently, but not always, used in conservation areas. They usually remove rights to make minor alterations to houses, including the replacement of doors and windows. More information is available on our Article 4 Direction pages.
