Much of the following text is taken from an exhibition, presented by urban designers Rummey Design Associates on behalf of Leicester City Council. This exhibition was part of our consultation with local people.

It presents the proposals for the regeneration of the public realm along Rutland Street and Halford Street within Leicester’s Cultural Quarter. The Area is known as Phase 2 of the Cultural Quarter.

Leicester City Council, together with a number of partners, is working on a range of complementary cultural initiatives that will stimulate economic growth whilst establishing Leicester as the major regional centre for the creative industries.

The project will involve the redevelopment of a number of sites within St George’s, the creation of new public open space and improvements to access to and through the area.

Its aim is :

1. To create a progression of ‘spaces’ of varying scale and character to direct people through the new Quarter to the Performing Arts Centre.

2. To integrate the Cultural Quarter, so that it becomes a real part of the city and exhibits enhanced links with the station and the city centre, with a mix of uses and an enhanced economy.

3. To give this part of Leicester a strong character of its own with clearly defined, attractive, and safe pedestrian /cycle routes.

4. To provide an attractive environment into which the creative business sector will want to locate.

5. To create a place that is comfortable (and exciting) both during day and night time.
