Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today. Rising temperatures will affect weather patterns, sea levels and the frequency of extreme weather events. The evidence increasingly supports the fact that human actions are to blame.
What causes climate change?
How will it affect Leicester?
What can I do?
Climate change is caused by the build up of greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere. These gases surround the Earth and are causing our climate to change in a number of ways.
Many of the activities in our modern lives cause more GHGs to be released into the atmosphere. The energy we use, the waste we create, the things we buy, the cars we drive and more all contribute to the problem. Our demand for all these things is increasing every day and so the levels of GHGs increase making the problems worse.
To reduce the threat of climate change, we must reduce the amount of GHGs that we produce.
To see what Leicester City Council is doing to reduce our GHG emissions please see the page: Preventing Climate Change.

Increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere are having a number of effects on our climate. The UK Climate Impact Projection (UKCIP) project analyses future climate projections and predicts the weather patterns that will affect different regions of the UK.
It has been predicted that by 2050 Leicester will be experiencing hotter, drier summers and colder, wetter winters.
