Leicester has a wealth of environmental activities and events for individuals and organisations to get involved in.  Some of the main opportunities are listed below.  Links are provided to further information.

  • Climate Change - Leicester Friends of the Earth and Transition Leicester  both welcome individuals wanting to get involved in doing something about climate change. 

  • Cycling - Visit our cycle-city page for information about events, activities and projects to do with cycling.

  • Eco House - Leicester’s show-home packed with ideas for reducing your own environmental impact.  Also hosts regular events and activities.  Visit the Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire website  for details and opening times.

  • Fairtrade - Contact Leicester Advocates Fair Trade (LAFT)  for details of what you can do and how to get involved.

  • Farmers Markets - Farmers markets can help the environment by reducing ‘food miles’.  For details of Leicester’s regular farmers market and others in Leicestershire visit the Leicestershire Food Links website  

  • Friends of the Earth - For details and how to get involved visit the Leicester Friends of the Earth website

  • Green Life Awards - Leicester’s own awards to recognise the hard work of individuals, community groups, businesses and others to improve the environment locally and make the city more sustainable.  See details of the 2010 winners.

  • Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire - A local charity offering regular activities, projects and events.  Visit the Groundwork website  for details.

  • Historic and Built Environment - Leicester Civic Society raises awareness about buildings and areas of historic or architectural importance and campaigns for them to be conserved.

  • Kids’ Activities - There are several Wildlife Watch Groupsin Leicestershire and Rutland offering regular environmental activities for children.

  • Nature Conservation - Several organisations run regular nature conservation tasks in and around Leicester.  Try the Council’s Parks Service, Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire, Leicester BTCV  and Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust.

  • Parks and Open Spaces - Join your local park ‘friends of’ group to get involved in how your local park or open space is run and improved.  For details visit our Parks Friends Groups page

  • Recycling Talks and Presentations - BIFFA Leicester can provide talks about recycling to community and residents’ groups and can also arrange tours of the Ball Mill where waste from city households is processed.

  • Skyride - Involves a one-day mass bike ride in Leicester open to all and a programme of smaller, local rides and other support to encourage cycling.  For images of the 2010 Skyride and details of local clubs and support visit the Skyride website.

  • Student green groups and volunteering - There are opportunties at DeMontfort University and the University of Leicester  for students wanting to get involved in environmental action.
