Housing and Council Tax Benefits

Council tax benefit is changing

 Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit are national awards paid by the local Council. They provide financial help for those on low incomes who have to rent their homes and/or who are also liable to pay Council Tax.

 

You can claim Housing Benefit if:


  • You pay rent to a private landlord, Housing Association or Local Authority, and are on a low income

  • You are working either full or part-time and earning a low wage 

  • You have savings of less than £16,000

  • You are receiving state benefits.

 

You can make a claim online for help to pay your  council tax, if you pay council tax on your home and meet any of the above requirements.


Child Benefit does not count as income when we calculate your Housing and Council Tax Benefit. 


Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance

If you are claiming Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance (income based) and are under 60 years of age, the Benefits Agency will provide you with a form to claim Housing Benefit, which you should complete and send to:
