Private Sector Housing Group

Inspecting private rented properties for disrepair and hazards, the Private Sector Housing Group offers a range of services that are designed to ensure that private rented properties in the city are safe for occupation, are in good repair, and have adequate fire safety measures and facilities for residents.

The Group is responsible for maintaining standards in privately rented houses in multiple occupation and single family properties and hostels.

The Group is also responsible for the registration of hostels under the local Leicestershire Act to control minimum standards of accommodation for people who are homeless.

The Group can take a number of actions to assist tenants who feel their landlord is failing to maintain a rented property to a satisfactory standard. These actions include instigating formal action against negligent landlords if necessary, carrying out works in default, and prosecuting landlords for non-compliance.
