Heritage Open Days: 2011 Events


2011 events organised by the City Council included:


  • The Magazine Gateway, The Newarke / Oxford Street. A tour around this fascinating and well known medieval building with the Curator of Leicester History, the only date in the year when this site is open to the public.

  • Piggy's Hollow and its Village, Main Street, Evington, Leicester. From Aefa's Tun to Avintone; Evington is a village with a long history. It was one of the biggest moated sites in Leicestershire; with its manor house, fishponds and deer park it would have looked impressive. An opportunity to find out about its rich history and how its future all depended on a hand of cards.

  • The National Gas Museum, 195 Aylestone Road, Leicester. The National Gas Museum was opened in 1977 and is housed under the clock tower of the Victorian gatehouse to the gas works. It is the largest collection of gas and gas related artefacts in the world. Discover the amazing history of gas at this unique museum.
