1. Postcard: 'Clissett Highbask' Rush Seat Chair

Ash armchair, the Clissett Highback, stained and polished and with rush seat before 1948.

Gimson based his famous ladder- back designs on traditional English forms , in particular the chairs of Philip Clissett. Clissett was born in 1817 and had been making chairs in Bosbury in Herefordshire since 1838. Grimson spent a few weeks with Clissett learning the basics of the craft; he went on to name this chair after the man who taught him.

2. Postcard: Brass Firedogs (1904)

The design of this pair of brass and steel firedogs is based in 17th Century examples at Haddon Hall in Derbyshire. They showcase Gimson's passion for using natural forms within his work, with leaves and flowering carnations making up most of the design.

3. Postcard: Ebony Box (1910)

Macassar ebony box lined with cherry and inlaid with silver and ivory c1904-10, 34.5 x 48.1 x 25.2

This is a box designed for a very expensive market, but note the dovetail joints are still left exposed giving the honesty of construction advocates by the Arts and Craft Movement.

4. Postcard: Macassa Ebony Cabinet (1907)

Inlaid with mother of pearl and with steel handles c1907 118 x 73 x 35.5

The mother-of pearl inlaid cabinet was inspired by English, Dutch and Spanish woodwork of the late seventieth century, which Gimson was able to see at the South Kensington Museums(now the Victoria & Albert Museums). This is one of the finest example of Gimson's inlaid work produced at the Daneway workshops.
