Art Gallery Refurbishment
Work begins on Monday 29th October to refurbish the main art gallery at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery.
Gallery
6 will be closed to the public from Monday 29th October to undergo the revamp, which
will enable a new display of Leicester’s fine art collections and
improvement of the facilities for weddings, concerts and private hire.
The
new display will include works which have not recently been on show and
will include major 16th to 19th century British and European artists
including Joseph Mallord William Turner, Lord Leighton, Edgar Degas and
Camille Pissarro.
There will also be improvements to the audio
visual facilities, which will benefit performances and private hire for
lectures, weddings and conference use.
The work will cost
£300,000, including a £150,000 Arts Council England grant, funding from
the Friends of Leicester and Leicestershire Museums and match funding
from Leicester City Council.
Assistant City Mayor for heritage,
leisure and sport, Cllr Piara Singh Clair, said: "New Walk Museum is a
well-loved and popular attraction and improving the main gallery will
allow visitors to see even more of our fine art collection than ever
before.
"The gallery will need to close for the work to take
place but I'm sure it will be well worth the wait and I am already
looking forward to seeing what it looks like.
The Victorian art gallery will re-open Summer 2013.
