Art Gallery Refurbishment

Work begins on Monday 29th October to refurbish the main art gallery at New Walk Museum & Art Gallery.

Gallery 6 will be closed to the public from Monday 29th October to undergo the revamp, which will enable a new display of Leicester’s fine art collections and improvement of the facilities for weddings, concerts and private hire.

The new display will include works which have not recently been on show and will include major 16th to 19th century British and European artists including Joseph Mallord William Turner, Lord Leighton, Edgar Degas and Camille Pissarro.

There will also be improvements to the audio visual facilities, which will benefit performances and private hire for lectures, weddings and conference use.

The work will cost £300,000, including a £150,000 Arts Council England grant, funding from the Friends of Leicester and Leicestershire Museums and match funding from Leicester City Council.

Assistant City Mayor for heritage, leisure and sport, Cllr Piara Singh Clair, said: "New Walk Museum is a well-loved and popular attraction and improving the main gallery will allow visitors to see even more of our fine art collection than ever before.

"The gallery will need to close for the work to take place but I'm sure it will be well worth the wait and I am already looking forward to seeing what it looks like.

The Victorian art gallery will re-open Summer 2013.

BBC - Your Paintings

Leicester Arts & Museums Service is delighted to work with the BBC and Public Catalogue Foundation on Your Paintings.

Your Paintings is a website which aims to show the entire UK national collection of oil paintings, the stories behind the paintings, and where to see them for real. It is made up of paintings from thousands of museums and other public institutions around the country.

There are an estimated 200,000 oil paintings in the UK's national collection, with the first 63,000 paintings already on the Your Paintings website. These include over 700 oil paintings in Leicester's Fine Art collection, featuring works by Edgar Degas, Laurence Stephen Lowry and Francis Bacon.

To view works from our art collections visit the Your Paintings website.

Public Catalogue Foundation Prints

Leicester Arts and Museums are delighted to participate in Public Catalogue Foundation Prints. This new scheme offers you the opportunity to buy prints of some of the paintings catalogued by the project, including at present 374 works from the Leicester Arts and Museums oil painting collections.

The online shop provides an opportunity to select your chosen painting from our collection and order a reproduction print, select a frame or perhaps just purchase a postcard or greetings card of your favourite painting.

Profits generated from sales are shared between the PCF and the participating painting collections and where paintings are still in copyright also with artists or their estates. The PCF’s share of profits goes towards sustaining its charitable objectives.
