Leicester won the silver gilt in the 2008 East Midlands in Bloom Awards!
This was the fourth year running that Leicester took part in the regional competition. Over previous years, Leicester has achieved considerable success in the urban regeneration category, with a gold award in 2005 and silver gilt awards in 2006 and 2007.
Leicester City Council, working with Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce* and other partners in the city centre, ensured 2008 was another blooming success.
Local businesses provided support to the scheme by putting up floral displays and brightening up their premises. Members of the business community also became major sponsors for the 2008 competition.
Route
The route was designed to showcase Leicester, including some of the city centre regeneration projects.
In the run up to the judging the council’s highways, cleansing and landscaping staff worked hard to ensure that the streets, street furniture, open spaces and flower displays were looking their best.
Over 12,000 bedding plants, 300 hanging baskets, an over 100 troughs were used to bring colour and vibrancy to the city centre. There were also a number of specially designed landscaping and planting schemes along the judging route. Village Gardens, a landscape gardening company supported Leicester's Bloom bid by sponsoring the planters.
