Green Flag

Green Flag Award logo

The Green Flag Award is a national quality standard for parks and open spaces across the country, not dissimilar to the Blue Flag award for beaches.

Sites that display a Green Flag can guarantee visitors that the park or green space has reached the highest standards of excellence and is a safe and accessible place to enjoy.

Applications are judged on a number of key criteria, which are:

  • A welcoming place

  • Healthy, safe and secure

  • Clean and well maintained

  • Sustainability

  • Conservation and heritage

  • Community Involvement

  • Marketing

  • Management

A site needs to score highly in each of these in order to be successful.

In 2012 the council has been awarded Green Flag awards for a record nine of it's parks and green spaces, which are:

Abbey Park

Aylestone Hall Gardens

Castle Gardens

Evington Park

Knighton Park

Spinney Hill Park

Watermead Country Park South

Welford Road Cemetery

Western Park

The award is administered by Keep Britain Tidy, the country’s leading environment charity.  More details on this and the Green Flag scheme can be found by going to www.greenflagaward.org.uk
