Parks Services Calendar 2010

Art in the Park

People of Leicester were encouraged to get out in the fresh air and make the most of the City’s parks and green spaces during national Love Parks Week, which took place between Saturday 25 July and Sunday 02 August 2009.

Leicester celebrated the Love Parks Week with an Art in the Park competition which was open for entries until the end of August. Art in the Park was a free and fun competition to celebrate Leicester’s Park’s. The competition was open to everyone and entries were judged on what in the judge’s view, best reflects Leicester’s beautiful parks and green spaces.

Entries came in thick and fast, in the form of photographs, oil paintings, line drawings, collages and children’s crayon pictures, all representing the artists interpretation of a Leicester Park. The judges had a tough time selecting the twelve images which have been reproduced into a 2010 Parks calendar. The calendar makes a great present or Christmas stocking filler and is available for a small suggested donation of £4 which goes to the Lord Mayor appeal which is the Leicester Children's Holiday Centre Appeal.

The Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre is located in the town of Mablethorpe in Lincolnshire, a stones throw from the beach. The centre provides an invaluable opportunity for children in need, who for a variety of reasons would otherwise not know the simple pleasures of a stress-free-two week vacation. A Childs Holiday is priceless however the charity relies solely on donations.

The 2010 Parks Calendar was launched as part of an art exhibition held in Evington House on Evington Park on Thursday 22 October where all of the Art in the Park competition entries were on display. The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor Roger Blackmore and his Lady Mayoress, Mrs Hilary Blackmore were in attendance and the Lord Mayor thanked everyone for entering the competition and presented a complimentary calendar to each of the winning artists.

Calendars are available by sending a cheque made payable to ‘The Lord Mayors Appeal’ for £4 to Parks Services, Park House, Abbey Park, Abbey Park Road, Leicester, LE4 5AQ or by visiting this office during office hours.
