Friends of Spinney Hill Park

The core of the Friends of Spinney Hill Park Group is made up of people who give their time voluntarily, working closely with Parks Services to provide regular activities and also to help improve the park.  They have a vision and strong determination to show the people of Leicester that there are many ways of improving our parks through the dedication of a strong volunteer base.

We are always happy to welcome new members, who can give a little or a lot of time to their chosen sub-group, which are listed below. There are also larger group meetings organised by the committee.

Please don’t feel daunted.  Parks Services is there to help the group and you will be able to meet new friends and make a difference to Spinney Hill Park. Great personal satisfaction can also be gained from helping others and you may gain new skills.

To join the groups or just for further information please call Park Officer for Spinney Hill Park on 0116 273 9992.

The sub-groups are as follows;

Kite Club

Starting with the Launch of the Club on 18th May 2008, the club will regularly meet each month at the weekend for kite flying.  The club has it’s own kites that new members can fly if they don’t have their own.  Come along and join in the fun! See details at the bottom of the page

The group has been generously sponsored by The Highwaymen, a kite specialist shop in Hinckley.

Dates to be confirmed.

Green Friends

As a member of this gardening club, volunteers will learn about the difference between weeds and plants, how to grow plants from seed, planting and maintaining special areas within the park and educating others of how to look after our park when we visit.  The skills gained, may lead to a job in the volunteer or horticultural sector.

Spinney Hill Park has a very important wildlife area at the rear of the Police Station, which needs regular special attention to sustain the habitats the wildlife needs to thrive.  Growing Friends will look towards improving these habitats by planting native species and making bird boxes.

Walking Friends

From 22nd September, during Walking Week, using the Leicester City Council Walking for Health leaflet, the volunteers will lead walks around the park every Tuesday at 10.30 am.  Walks are based on three levels of fitness.  We advise that new members consult their doctor before considering which level is right for them.  To join in and get details of where to meet contact 0116 273 9992

Event Friends

Parks Services and the Friends of Spinney Hill Park work together to run the Children's Summer Fun Days and other events throughout the year.  See details at the bottom of the page

Funding Friends

A dedicated group of volunteers will get together with Parks Services to discuss ways of improving Spinney Hill Park, create working projects and actively raise funds through local donations, sponsorship, working partnerships, local committee funds and National Lottery funding streams.

If you a head for figures and would like to understand how a park is managed, this group may be the one for you.

Our parks are learning to adjust to the needs of modern day society but in today’s hustle and bustle of daily life, it is all too easy to forget that Spinney Hill Park is a vital green space or garden within an urban jungle.  Apart from providing regular attractions for visitors, Parks still have a vital role to play, by just providing an open space in which to relax and switch off.
