The Hinckley Road site was purchased for the development of a park in 1897 and is the largest park in Leicester offering 178 acres to explore. The main drive features a wide avenue of trees which were laid out for the inaugural opening in 1899. Within easy access from here are the children’s play areas, bowls greens, tennis courts and woodland walk.
The graceful contours of the park are a blend of meadows, mature woods and hedgerows, interspersed with newly established shrub and wooded areas. Overall this creates an ecological environment where wildlife abounds.
The park offers a wide range of activities that include a spacious well equipped playground, a woodland walk incorporating a picnic area and a bandstand where visiting musicians perform during the summer months. The park also plays host to cycle cross events, cross country running and the hugely popular Cancer Research 'Race for Life' each year.
The park is included in the Passport to Parks scheme - can you find the plaque?
