A FREE weekly run around a city park is starting this Saturday in a bid to get people fit and active.
Braunstone Park will host the city's first ever 'parkrun' event this Saturday (25 September) - a timed 5km run for all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes. The free run will take place at around 9am every Saturday thereafter.
Everyone is welcome to attend, which is supported by Leicester City Council as part of its 3x30 Pledge - an initiative that encourages people to take part in half an hours exercise, three times a week. The council is also working in partnership with Voluntary Action Leicestershire and NHS Leicester City to deliver the event.
Rob Wann, cabinet lead for leisure and culture, said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with VAL and the NHS to bring parkrun to Leicester and hope that it is just as successful here as it is in all the other locations across the country."
Parkruns started in 2004 and are community events run by local volunteers, who set up the event, time the runs and marshal the course. There are 36 parkrun events in the UK, with more than 4,500 runners every Saturday morning.
All Parkruns take place at 9am every Saturday morning in parkland surroundings and encourage people of every ability to take part, from those taking their first steps to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; it welcomes all.
No need to book just turn up and run, jog or walk.
Parkrun is sponsored by Nike, Sweatshop, London Marathon and Lucozade Sport. Nike gives t-shirts/jackets to runners when they complete 10/50/100 and 250 runs to provide incentives for people to get up and run.
