Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) training is run in partnership with six other local authorities within the East Midlands region and Birmingham University.
Following the recent amendments to the Mental Health Act, AMHP training is now:-

A Higher Specialist Post Qualifying Award for Social Workers

Open to nurses, occupational therapists and psychologists working within Mental Health services

Academically is a Post Graduate Diploma and is therefore assessed at Masters level.
Applicants must commit to undertaking the full award which is in 3 stages as follows. Each of the stages must be successfully completed in sequence.
Stage 1 (Modules 1 and 2): Selection and Preparation
This is year 1 and runs from April to September (for full time staff) each year with the application and selection process beginning in October for the following year.
Stage 2: (Modules 3 to 5) AMHP Qualification
This is year 2 and runs from April to September (for full time staff) and participants are away from their normal place of work for the whole duration of this stage.
Stage 3: (Module 6) Mentoring and Assessing the work of Other Mental Health Professionals.
This module starts in April (year 3). It is a requirement of this module to mentor and assess a stage 1 AMHP candidate.
