The latest Leicester Carers Strategy was produced in 2009 and launched formally in March 2010.
The new strategy is called 'Leicester Carers Strategy 2009 – 2011' and was developed by Leicester City Council and NHS Leicester City.
Local carers were involved in the putting together of the strategy from the outset, helping to ensure that it reflects what is important to them.
Nearly one in 10 people living in Leicester acts as a carer, proving support for a family member or friend who may have health or social care needs.
A key aim of the strategy is to help ensure carers are aware of the range of support available to them and sets out areas of priority action for the next three years. These include:
-
The need to identify carers early
-
Assessing the needs of carers and make appropriate services available
-
Ensuring access to information and advice
-
Supporting carers to access or retain employment
-
Helping carers to stay healthy
Leicester City Council has pledged an additional £220,000 for services for carers services in each of the next three years.
