Our aim is to enable people with disabilities to live independently, in their own home for as long as they want or are able to.
We can arrange services that support relatives, friends or neighbours of any age who care for physically disabled and/or sensory impaired people living in the community.
Our services are available to people with disabilities who:
-
Live alone
-
Have relatives or friends looking after them
-
Need some extra help with personal tasks
-
Have been ill or are leaving hospital.
If living at home is becoming increasingly difficult for you or the person that looks after you, then we may be able to offer help with looking at alternative suitable accommodation.
We will be able to provide information about the different homes and supported accommodation available in the City. This includes residential homes that we run, and those run by private or voluntary organisations.

If you, or someone you look after, needs help, please contact us.
We will then discuss the situation with you and see if and how we can help, the best option for meeting your needs and whether there will be any changes for the services we either provide or arrange for you.

When you ask for our help, we will do a needs assessment. This is simply a way for us to gather information about your needs so that we can learn about the difficulties you are experiencing and how best we can help.
The assessment itself is free but, depending on your income and savings, you may be charged for some of the services we arrange for you.
However, many people with lower dependency needs are unlikely to be eligible for services from us. This is because the money available to us is limited – so services are targeted at those individuals with a greater need.

The Disabled people home adaptations give advice about better ways of doing things. We may be able, dependent on your assessed need, to give you equipment to make life easier, or simple adaptations like handrails.
Services are wide-ranging and vary depending on individual needs, but the Services for People with Disabilities pages as is a brief list of some of the services we may be able to arrange:
