Hospice care, sometimes referred to as 'palliative care', is a term which is intended to refer to the medical, nursing and other ways of relieving the distress of patients with advanced incurable diseases and, very importantly, of providing support for the patients' families.
Present day palliative care includes drug treatment, but also physiotherapy, radiotherapy, occupational and art therapy, counselling, social and spiritual support.
Some private nursing and rest homes also specialise in the care of the terminally ill people. Your doctor or hospital consultant should know of such homes in your area
Palliative care is the holistic approach to patients with advanced, progressive illness.
It provides management of pain and other symptom control with the provision of psychological, social and spiritual support as when is paramount. Palliative care emphasises a good quality of life rather than prolonged life.
Palliative care is the total care of patients and their families by a multi-professional team, at a time when the patient's disease is no longer responsive to curative treatment and life expectancy is relatively short.
LOROS (the Leicestershire and Rutland Organisation for the Relief of Suffering) is a local charity whose purpose is the provision of a comprehensive service of continuing care for people throughout Leicestershire and Rutland with advanced incurable diseases, together with support for their families.
