Short Breaks/Family Link Scheme for disabled children

Fostering - short breaks/family

You could change the world for a disabled young person just by offering regular short breaks in your home. You would also be making a massive difference to an entire family’s quality of life.

  • Short Breaks usually involve stays of 1 or 2 nights – typically 1 weekend a month.

  • Arrangements can be flexible to suit your holidays, work and family commitments.

  • People who have nursing or similar experience are always welcome.

  • Disabilities range from complex special needs to physical disabilities and/or learning difficulties.

  • All carers are assessed, trained and matched to a suitable young person.

  • There is usually an introductory day visit.

  • You can be single, a couple, or a family with children.

  • Carers are usually aged 25 – 60s. Fit retired people make great carers.

  • You will receive payments, training and support.

  • Hopefully the link between your family and the young person will last for years.

Pat and Phil are Short Breaks carers. They say: "Don has cerebral palsy and stays with us for one weekend a month. It is a good break for him and a bit of a rest for his family. We have our own children of a similar age so we all go out together and do the things everyone does.

"We look forward to Don’s visits and the scheme is flexible so we can always switch weekends around for holidays and things like that."
