Carers come from all walks of life, from different backgrounds and
live in all kinds of homes. You don’t need lots of qualifications but a
genuine interest in caring for someone and welcoming them into your
home.
Experience of caring, whether through paid or voluntary work, or through caring
for
a family member or a friend is necessary. If you don’t have caring
experience the Shared Lives team can direct you to organisations that
can help you to gain experience.
Shared Lives carers have to be 18 or over. They must also be able to
read and write, so that, for example, they can read letters for the
person they are caring for.
The work involved will depend upon the person who is being supported. As
well as being patient it could include:
- Supporting to develop practical skills
- Encouraging social contact
- Building confidence
- Offering emotional support
Shared Lives carers offer essential support to adults in Leicester
who need care and it is vital that carers feel valued and supported.
Shared Lives carers receive:
-
the support of a Shared Lives worker
-
training and development
-
financial support: carers are paid a fee for each adult they
support. The fee is to cover all expenses and includes an allowance for
the carer
-
flexible hours: caring can be done to fit around existing commitments.
