Fact sheet 6 - Personal Budgets

A Personal Budget is money allocated by the council for people to arrange support and services to meet their individual needs and identified outcomes.

A Personal Budget lets people know how much money they have to spend on social care.

Will everyone have a Personal Budget?

No. People who do not receive financial support from us will not have a Personal Budget. However, they will still be offered information and advice on other support, should they need it.

How is it calculated?

We will use a points based system to score the answers given in a Self Assessment
Questionnaire. Please see fact sheet 3, “What is the Resource Allocation System?” for more information.

How can a Personal Budget be spent?

Personal Budgets let people know exactly how much money they have for their social care and enables them to choose how it is managed and spent.

If people choose to take and manage all or part of their Personal Budget to have direct control of their funding and support it is called a Direct Payment.

Managing a Personal Budget

There are a number of ways for someone to manage their Personal Budget:

  • Take all or part of the Personal Budget as a Direct Payment. In which case, the money will usually be paid into a bank account;
  • Allow a family member or friend to manage the money of their behalf;
  • A provider or trusted party holds the money and works with them to deliver the support needed;
  • The council can be asked to manage the money and arrange services on their behalf.
