Data Protection for Families

Families registering with services provided by the council at Children’s Centres will be asked to sign a consent form to confirm agreement that the information they provide can be held on their behalf.

The information provided by parents/carers about themselves and their children, will be stored on a computer system and kept in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

The data will be used for monitoring and to offer support to families living within Leicester.

This information may be shared with other work teams within the council. In these circumstances, the sharing and exchange of  information will be based on a strict “need to know” basis and is often needed in order to tailor services to meet the needs of families within the city.

In some instances the council may wish to share information with other partner organisations such as the NHS and County Council. Where this is deemed necessary, your consent will be sought and you will have the right to refuse.

Anyone who receives information from us is also under a legal duty to keep it confidential.

Only in exceptional circumstances will your consent not be sought, for example:

  • To prevent serious harm to others
  • To help prevent or prosecute serious crime
  • As a requirement of statute law or because a court has asked for it
  • If a person is legally incapable of giving valid consent
  • In urgent circumstances where delay would not be in the best interest of a child or the child’s parent/carer
