Area Traffic Control Centre

ATC Control Room
ATC Control Room

The Area Traffic Control Centre is the operational hub of the Transport Systems Section. From here, the many intelligent transport systems form the management and control of day-to-day traffic on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland highways are managed.

Currently, the systems include:

  • Over 800 sets of signals

  • 31 car park guidance variable message signs

  • Over 100 traffic cameras

  • Over 4000 bus stops
  • 13 pollution monitors

From the centre, the traffic signals are constantly being monitored and the timings are being adjusted to aid the flow of traffic. Faults are recorded and passed onto the engineers on street and data is collected to aid the future development of traffic schemes.

To report a fault: Contact the ATC Centre.

The main road network is monitored by CCTV cameras which gives a real time picture of the traffic situation in and outside the city.

The service also provides regular live broadcasts on Radio Leicester of the local traffic and transport situation.

For more information please contact Area Traffic Control on (0116) 299 5656.

Traffic Information Service

Another area of the ATC Centre is the Traffic Information Service.

Increasing importance is attached to providing up to the minute information to road users about the condition of the transport network

A central database of incident and roadwork information is maintained comprising data, which has been supplied from a variety of sources including the Police, Local Authorities, utility companies, public transport operators and the general public.

Regular broadcasts are made on the BBC Radio Leicester network and the information can be easily accessed to send regular reports to the motoring organisations and the media.
