Travel Aid Scheme for Unemployed People

Who is eligible?

The pass is for Leicester city residents who are registered unemployed (signing on at a Jobcentre) to help them seek work. It is not for their dependants.

There is no similar scheme for people who live outside the city of Leicester.

What benefits will the pass give me?

The pass entitles you to travel by bus, at half the normal adult single or return fare.

What services can it be used on?

Passes can be used on all local bus services in Leicestershire and the city of Leicester.

They can also be used if one end of your journey is in the above area, and the other is no further afield than one of the following:

  • Derby
  • Nottingham
  • Newark
  • Grantham
  • Stamford
  • Peterborough
  • Corby
  • Kettering
  • Northampton
  • Rugby
  • Coventry
  • Nuneaton
  • Atherstone
  • Tamworth
  • Burton-upon-Trent.

How long are the passes valid for?

Each pass is valid for a 4 week period.

Is there a charge for the concession?

Each for week pass costs £1.

How do I apply?

  • First, complete and sign the top half of the application form, which can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

  • Next, prove that you are unemployed AND seeking work; by getting the form stamped at the Jobcentre where you sign on.

  • Take the completed application form to a pass issuing point (listed below), with a passport size photo. Altered forms will not be accepted. The photocard is issued free and lasts indefinitely but you must supply.

  •  A 4 week pass can then be purchased for £1.

How do I renew my pass?

Simply follow the above procedures using a fresh application form every 4 weeks.

You may renew your pass before the expiry date. Any unused days (up to 7) will be added to the validity period of your new pass.

You must present your photocard (unless providing a photograph for a new photocard) and surrender your old pass.

Using your pass.

Every time you travel you must show your Travel Aid photocard with your pass to receive the discount.
