Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre (Mablethorpe) has been in existence for 118 years. Its purpose is to provide free seaside holidays for children who would not normally get a holiday.
Located at Mablethorpe among the sand dunes, the holiday centre is traditional in many ways. The children eat local food, sit together at meal times, and make new friends. They visit local cinemas and shops, amusement parks and, using their own ‘secret path’ over the dunes, enjoy supervised play on the beach and in the sea. The centre has its own play equipment and the staff organise games, projects and educational activities. Everything the centre does is designed to benefit the children that use it.
Over the years, more than 50,000 children have benefited from the charity’s work and most remember their time at the centre as a magical interlude in an often grim childhood. The charity receives no statutory funding and relies on donations, appeals and legacies. Without the generous support of the people of Leicester and Leicestershire, it would be unable to continue its work.
