Step-Up work placements
We launched the Step-Up employment initiative to encourage employers to provide paid work placements for unemployed people aged 18 to 24, who have been claiming jobseeker’s allowance or employment support allowance for a minimum of six months.
Grants of up to £3,750 are available to employers who are interested in appointing a young person within their business. The programme will support more than 200 work placements, of between 16 and 30 hours a week, at the minimum wage.
Phase one was launched in November 2012 and created more than 140 six-month paid jobs, working in partnership with local employers.
Following an evaluation of phase one, many employees have already completed their contracts and have gone on to find long-term employment or started further training.
We have committed more than £500,000 to the latest phase of the project, which will also draw on the government’s youth contract wage incentive scheme to provide a co-ordinated grants package for employers.
