Friends of Jewry Wall Museum
The Friends of the Jewry Wall Museum stand for the improvement and promotion of Jewry Wall Museum and Roman bath house site in Leicester. We work with the museum to ensure that it stays open to the public, making its wonderful archaeological collections available, enjoyable and relevant to all.
Who we are
The Friends of Jewry Wall Museum first met in 2004, having gone from strength to strength and now have over 150 members and welcome more.
"What we do in life echoes in eternity" - attributed to Maximus Decimus Meridius.
We hold regular themed events throughout the year and also support the events organised by the museum staff. All our events are widely advertised and usually attract around 300 visitors. Our members are welcome to come and help with any and all of our events.
There is an annual coach tour in the summer and we have been to Flag Fen, Lunt Roman Camp and Lincoln. This year we are going to the Roman museum at Cirencester.
In 2012, The Friends of Jewry Wall Museum were the regional winners of the Marsh Trust Award which is given for volunteer contributions to new museum learning.
What we do
The friends regularly give guided tours of the museum and the bath house site to visitors. We publish a newsletter three times a year to keep our members up to date with news, events and ways in which they can become more involved.
All the money that we raise is used to fund improvements to the museum.
Recent funding has included a donation to bring the Kilby Hoard of third century coins to the museum. During the winter of 2013/14 a modest refurbishment of the central section was successfully carried out, with both financial and practical help from the Friends. We have bought two picnic benches for the site and provided an audio guide for the Roman baths.
