Swimming lessons

We have several swimming lessons catered for both children and adults. Our lessons start from babies and toddlers and lessons are available to suit beginners to those more confident.

Further information

Child lessons

Aimed at babies and toddlers up to three years of age. Water confidence is developed through play, songs and rhymes. Requires a parent/guardian in the water.

Pre-school lessons

Aimed at children three years and over. Children are supported by a teacher in the water and floatation aids. Adults do not go in to the pool. Small class sizes enable children to learn and develop swimming skills such as travelling through water, floating on their front and back, submerging and jumping in.

Older beginners

Aimed at children eight years and over. Older children are encouraged to learn to swim together with the support of their fully qualified instructor.

Junior lessons – stages 1 to 7

Stage 1 is available for water confident four-year olds or for five years olds with limited water confidence. Children will progress through stages 1 to 7 earning stage awards and distance awards throughout. Every stage will build upon fundamental skills learned in the previous stage so that by Stage 7 children are confident and competent swimmers able to swim lengths of the pool in a variety of strokes.

Older junior lessons – stages 8 to 10

After completion of Stage 7, swimmers can choose to further develop technique in the competitive swimming stages 8, 9 and 10 in preparation for a club environment or can choose to undertake Challenge Awards in Bronze, Silver and Gold, which focuses of the development of a wide range of skills.

Rookie Lifeguard

Aimed at children from eight to 12 years old. The programme runs through awards in Bronze, Silver and Gold and teaches valuable lifesaving skills and techniques.

Adult lessons

Lessons are available to suit non-swimmers right up to swimmers capable of swimming lengths who are looking for guidance to refine their technique and develop endurance.

1:1 Lessons

Individual lessons are available upon request. Swimmers with special needs or disabilities will take priority regarding the allocation of these sessions.

Swimming crash courses

Intensive crash courses run every school holiday across the city. These provide a great boost to children and give them the extra confidence they need ahead of a key event such as a family holiday.
