Event to inspire budding community gardeners

BUDDING community gardeners can pick up tips and advice from local experts at an event at Evington Park this week.
The free event – which takes place on Friday (Mar 20) from 12.30-3.30pm – will give people the chance to find out about the support available for community gardening projects through the Leicester Food Plan and the RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ scheme.
There will be demonstrations of seed sowing and cane structure workshops from the park’s gardeners. There will also be a chance to find out about some of the community gardening projects already brightening up the city and meet some of the volunteers involved.
Deputy City Mayor Rory Palmer said: “There are already some excellent and innovative local food growing and community gardening projects in the city.
“We want to provide the inspiration and support to kick-start new groups and to help develop into a citywide network of community growers.”
Last week, the city council announced that the first nine grants had been awarded to community fruit and vegetable growing projects across the city as part of its Get Growing scheme.
There are currently 31 groups actively involved in improving their local areas as part of the RHS ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Scheme.
